Ask Why does a brand new social media account sometimes grow faster than an older one in the same space?

A new account is sometimes pushed by the platform itself because the algorithm wants to see if fresh content can perform. Older accounts may have built up a pattern of low engagement over time, which makes the platform show their posts to fewer people. A new account also comes in with a fresh strategy and tends to be more focused on what is working right now. Meanwhile, older accounts sometimes stick to habits that used to work but no longer do. Is the way platforms treat new accounts versus older ones actually fair to people who have been building for years?

In my opinion, it doesn't really come down to fairness, it's just how algorithms are designed. New accounts get a trial push to see what works, while older accounts are judged based on their past performance. So if an old account's engagement drops, the platform naturally shows it to fewer people, even if the creator has years of effort behind it.

A new account can sometimes grow faster because it is using fresh content ideas that match what people currently want to see. An older account may still be posting in the same style that worked before, while trends and audience interests have changed. Growth often comes from relevance, not just how long an account has existed.

One reason for that is that some older accounts build up inactive followers over time. When those followers stop engaging, the platform may see the content as less interesting. A new account starts with a clean slate and can attract people who are more likely to interact.
