For a local business, the location targeting becomes the most important setting. You limit the ads to a specific city, town, or even a short radius around the business address. The keywords also tend to include location-based phrases like "plumber in Lagos" or "bakery near me." For a national business, you focus more on audience type and intent rather than location. The budget also spreads wider, and you often need more ad variations to speak to different regions. The two setups are very different even if the platform is the same. So what do you think is the biggest mistake businesses make when setting location targeting in Google Ads?
 
Local ads need to say something like "we're in your area" right away because people searching locally want to know you're close, not just available. A national ad can afford to be more general, but a local one has to feel personal and nearby from the very first line. That changes everything about how you write it.
 
Something people don't think about enough is that a local business is often competing with big national brands on the same page. A small plumber in Austin is going up against companies with huge budgets. So the local guy has to be smarter, not louder, by targeting the right streets and neighborhoods instead of casting a wide net.
 
There's also the question of what you do after the click. A national brand can send traffic to a general homepage. But for a local business, if someone clicks an ad and lands on a page that doesn't mention their city or show local contact details, they'll leave fast. The whole experience has to feel local, not just the ad itself.
 
When dealing with a local business, I focus heavily on location targeting and searches that show strong local intent. People searching for services nearby are usually ready to take action, so I make sure the ads mention the city, area, or service location. For a national business, the strategy becomes broader.
