Ask Should content be built around what you know well or what your audience is actively searching for?

The best content usually lives somewhere between both. If you only write about what you know without checking whether anyone is searching for it, you might create great content that nobody finds. On the other hand, chasing search trends on topics you barely understand often produces shallow content that people can see through quickly. Using free tools like Google Trends or Answer the Public helps you find topics your audience cares about, and then you add your own knowledge to make it useful. Is it better to lead with expertise or audience demand when planning content?

Audience demand should usually come first because content only creates value when people are actually searching for or interested in it. However, expertise is what makes that content truly useful and trustworthy once they find it. I also think the best approach is to start with a topic your audience cares about using tools like search trends, then layer in your own knowledge, insights, or experience to make it deeper and more valuable than competitors. Balancing both ensures your content is discoverable while still standing out in quality.

A good content strategy usually combines both. Writing about topics you understand well helps you explain things clearly, while choosing subjects that people are already searching for increases the chances of getting traffic. When those two come together, the content is more useful and has a better chance of reaching the right audience.

For me, I like to start with what my audience is interested in and then use my knowledge to answer those questions in a practical way. That approach keeps the content relevant while also giving readers something they cannot easily find elsewhere. It is a good balance between attracting visitors and building trust.
