Ask What negative keywords do most digital marketers forget to add when starting out?

The most commonly missed ones are words like "free," "jobs," "course," "salary," and "how to." These bring in people who are researching or looking for employment, not buying. For example, if you sell accounting software, someone searching "accounting software jobs" is not your customer. New marketers often focus only on what to target and forget to block what is irrelevant. Reviewing your search terms report regularly helps you catch these. What negative keywords have you found most useful to add early on?

First, I don't guess. I type a basic keyword into Google and scan the People Also Ask boxes. That's your cheat sheet for what beginners actually want to know. Then, I stalk the top 3 results. I'm not copying them; I'm looking for gaps. Are they overly technical? Too vague? I write the explain-it-like-I'm-five version they skipped. Finally, I lean into my beginner status. I document my learning journey. That feels authentic and ranks for long-tail questions.

Many new digital marketers forget to block "free" related searches in their ads. Words like free course, free download, or free guide bring people who are only looking for something without paying. These clicks can eat up budget fast without bringing real buyers, so it is something that should be handled early in setup.
Another common mistake is ignoring job related searches. Terms like job, salary, or how to become can pull the wrong audience when the goal is selling a product or service. This makes the traffic look active but does not bring real sales at the end.

A common group of negative keywords beginners forget are "free," "cheap," and "jobs" related terms. These can attract people who are not looking to buy, but only searching for free resources or employment. If you are running ads for a product or affiliate offer, these clicks can drain your budget without bringing real conversions.
