Ask What is a reasonable amount of information to share during a pitch before it crosses into doing free work?

Pitching for a project often requires showing some level of thinking to convince a client you understand their needs, but there is a point where the ideas you share become detailed enough to be used on their own. It is hard to know where that line is, especially when clients ask detailed questions before committing to anything. I think this is something many freelancers deal with but rarely talk about openly. How do you decide how much of your thinking to reveal during early conversations, and do you have any boundaries in place to prevent your ideas from being used without an agreement?
