Should I charge a deposit before starting any freelance project?

In freelancing, there is no total trust. That is why you need to make sure that you ask your clients to deposit some money before they can be allow access to you. More freelancers always allow deposit of at least 25 to 50 percent. This will give the freelancers the guarantee that there is a commitment from the clients. What do you think about this?
