Ask Is engagement rate actually more useful than follower count or do brands still chase the big number?

Follower count can make an account look popular, but engagement rate often shows how active the audience really is. Engagement rate means the number of likes, comments, shares, and other actions compared to the audience size. An account with fewer followers but strong engagement may have more influence than a larger account with little activity. Many brands still pay attention to follower numbers because they are easy to see. Which measure do you think gives a clearer picture of an account's value?

Follower count is vanity; engagement is reality. 100K followers with 0.5% engagement means maybe 500 people actually care. Meanwhile, 10K followers at 8% engagement gets you 800 real interactions. But here's the catch: chasing follower count is easier to report to the boss. It's a simple ego metric. Many brands still pay for reach, not connection. So yeah, engagement wins long-term. But don't be surprised when that billboard campaign still brags about 50 million followers. Old habits die hard.

I believe engagement rate tells a much better story than follower count alone. A page can have a huge number of followers, but if very few people like, comment, share, or click on the content, those followers are not creating much value. An active audience that regularly interacts with posts is often more useful to brands than a large audience that rarely pays attention.

I think engagement rate is far more useful than follower count when measuring the value of an audience. A page with 10,000 followers and strong engagement can often generate better results than a page with 100,000 followers who rarely interact. Likes, comments, shares, and clicks give a much better picture of how interested the audience really is.

Engagement rate has become the metric brands trust most because it shows how actively an audience interacts with content, not just how many people follow an account. Many brands still chase large follower counts because big numbers create instant credibility and wider reach. In reality, the strongest influencer partnerships usually balance both an engaged audience proves influence, while a sizable following provides scale.
