Ask How do you respond when a potential client asks for your best rate right at the start of the conversation?

It is common for some clients to ask for your best rate immediately, even before explaining the full project. This can put you in a tight position because you may not know the full scope of work yet. If you give a low price too quickly, you may regret it later when the work becomes bigger. I think it is better to understand the job first before talking about price. How do you respond in this situation without losing the client or underpricing yourself?
