Keyword difficulty means how hard it is to rank on the first page of search results, and traffic potential means how many visitors a keyword can bring. If a keyword has high traffic but very high difficulty, a new site may not rank for it soon. A better plan is to mix medium difficulty keywords with low difficulty keywords so traffic can start coming while waiting for bigger keywords to rank. This way traffic grows step by step. What is a good way to balance these two things?

Balancing keywords is kinda like picking your battles. Don't bother with the super crazy hard ones you'll never rank for, but also don't waste time on stuff nobody's even searching. Look at difficulty vs. traffic. Throw in some long-tail ones too; they're easier to rank for and still pull in clicks.

Honestly, the best way to balance it is to think in terms of short-term wins and long-term bets. I usually pick mostly low-to-medium difficulty keywords that I can realistically rank for soon, and then sprinkle in a few high-traffic, high-difficulty ones as long-term goals. This way, you start getting traffic early (which builds momentum and authority), while slowly working toward bigger opportunities. It's less about chasing the highest volume and more about choosing keywords your site actually has a chance to compete for right now.

I think the best way to balance it is not to chase only big traffic or only easy keywords. If you go for high traffic keywords, they are usually very competitive and hard to rank. If you go only for easy ones, the traffic may be too small to matter.
