Can you work for free for your new clients to retain them?

In a way to retain clients, there are some freelancers that can go as far as working for free for clients. They believe that they need to do this for to show loyalty to them. While some other freelancers have seen this as an act of desperation, others don't really see anything wrong with this in as much as they are not doing it always. What's your take about this?
