Ask Why does it feel like social media platforms are always finding new ways to limit your reach to your own followers?

Platforms like Facebook and Instagram started out showing your posts to most of your followers, but that changed as these platforms grew. Today, reach is largely controlled by what the algorithm decides is worth showing, and that decision is heavily influenced by engagement. If a post does not get likes, comments, or shares quickly, the platform stops pushing it. There is also a financial reason behind this. Platforms earn money from ads, so limiting free reach gives businesses a reason to pay for wider distribution. Do you think platforms are being fair to businesses that built their audience without using paid promotion?

It's not a simple case of fair or unfair. Facebook and Instagram, run by Meta Platforms, moved to algorithm-based feeds to handle content volume and improve user experience. Businesses now face reduced organic reach, which can be frustrating, though free access still exists. Whether it feels fair depends on whether you expect lasting unpaid visibility or accept a pay-to-scale model.

It feels that way because platforms are constantly changing how content is ranked and shown. The difference is that they are trying to prioritize what keeps users engaged, not necessarily what a creator posts to their followers. So even if you have followers, your content may only reach a portion of them based on engagement signals and timing.

The difference also comes from how social media has shifted toward paid promotion. Many platforms now give more visibility to posts that are boosted or highly engaging. Organic reach is still possible, but it competes with a lot more content and algorithm changes that filter what users see in their feeds.
