Putting together a detailed proposal takes real time and thought, so it stings when you later find out a client used everything you laid out to go and hire someone else at a lower price. It happens more often than most people talk about, and it raises a real question about how much detail is too much to share before any agreement is in place. Some freelancers have started keeping their proposals more general until a contract is signed, which seems like a reasonable response. Have you ever had a proposal used this way, and has it changed how much detail you now include upfront?

It is a funny experience and it should be expecting something like this especially from client. Any of the clients who does that to you is not worthy of your time and expertise. They are cheap clients who doesn't deserve your time so there is nothing to worry about there. Some of them are actually doing window shopping in the freelance marketplace.
