Ask Why do my posts reach fewer people when I add links?

Social media platforms want people to stay on their app as long as possible. When you add a link that takes someone away to another website, the platform sees this as you trying to pull users away. So they show your post to fewer people as a kind of penalty. This happens on Instagram, Facebook, and even TikTok. The algorithm basically thinks if people click your link and leave, they're not spending time on the app anymore. Instead of putting links directly in your posts, try adding them to your bio or your stories where the impact on reach isn't as bad. You could also post the content first without a link, then add it in the comments later. What do you think about this approach?

You don't add links to the article directly. When you do this, people may not want to click. The only time people click on links is if the article is compelling or may be you are fortunate to meet with the audience. If not, you may not have much traffic with it.

Social media platforms want to keep people on their site as long as possible. When you add a link that takes people away, the algorithm punishes your post by showing it to fewer people.
Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn all do this because they make money from ads and they need users to stay scrolling. The longer people stay on the platform, the more ads they see. Your link works against their business model, so they reduce your reach.

Try posting your content natively first without any links, then add the link in the comments after it gets some initial engagement. This tricks the algorithm a bit because the post enters the feed without a link, so it doesn't get penalized right away.

Different platforms handle links differently. LinkedIn actually rewards posts with links to articles because it's a professional network where sharing resources is normal. But Instagram hates links so much they don't even make them clickable in captions.

Instagram has features like Stories with swipe-up links or link stickers that work better than trying to put links in posts. These native options keep people on the platform while still directing them to your content, so the algorithm doesn't punish you as much.

Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn want to keep users on their site rather than sending them elsewhere, so posts with external links can get lower reach. It's just how the system works. Links can also make your post look promotional, which algorithms might downrank. A casual way to work around this is to put links in the comments instead of the main post, or shorten your post text to keep it engaging. That way, you still share your link without the algorithm punishing your reach.
