Ask Why do I get fewer likes when I use more hashtags?

A long list of hashtags may look helpful, but it can make a post feel forced or messy to someone seeing it. Many platforms show posts with too many hashtags to fewer people because it looks like spam. Some viewers also skip posts with long hashtag blocks because they feel the content may not be genuine. Using a few clear hashtags that match the topic usually works better because people searching for those terms find you more naturally. It also keeps the post clean and easy to read. What do you think?

Using a ton of hashtags doesn't always get you more likes, in fact, it can do the opposite. Too many hashtags can make your post look spammy, and sometimes the algorithm even hides it from people. Plus, when you cram in a bunch, your post gets lost in all the other posts under those hashtags. Using just a few that actually fit your post usually works way better. Basically, less is more so pick the ones that really matter.

Instagram's algorithm might be flagging your posts as spammy when you load up on hashtags. The platform has gotten stricter about this over the past few years. Using 20 or 30 hashtags used to work, but now it can actually limit your reach because it looks like you're trying to game the system.

Another possibility is that the hashtags you're choosing are either too popular or completely irrelevant. Huge hashtags like #love or #instagood have millions of posts, so yours gets buried in seconds. Nobody scrolling through those feeds will ever find you. On the flip side, if you're using random hashtags just to hit a number, people who click on them won't care about your content and will scroll right past.

Sometimes using fewer hashtags actually helps because your post stays in those feeds longer. When you use 25 hashtags, you're competing in 25 different spaces at once, and your post disappears fast in all of them. With 5 well-chosen hashtags, you have a better chance of staying visible and getting engagement from people genuinely interested.

Your followers might also be getting annoyed by the clutter. Posts with giant blocks of hashtags at the end look messy and unprofessional. People associate that style with spam accounts or bots, so they scroll past even if the actual content is good. First impressions matter on social media.

There's also a chance you've been shadowbanned without realizing it. If you've used banned or broken hashtags in the past, Instagram can limit your reach for a while even after you stop using them. Your posts won't show up in hashtag feeds at all, so adding more hashtags won't help and might make things worse.
