Ask What should someone do if a client takes credit for work they did not do?

It can be really frustrating when a client presents your work as if they did it themselves, after all the time and effort you put in. The first step should be to stay calm and decide if it is worth addressing directly or letting it go. Keeping clear contracts and records of work done can protect a freelancer if the issue comes up again. Should freelancers always speak up when this happens, or is it sometimes better to stay quiet?

First, don't blow up in the meeting. Immediately after, send a polite recap email to everyone involved, casually outlining your specific steps and contributions. This creates a paper trail without sounding accusatory. Next, have a private, calm chat with the client. Frame it as a team win, but gently clarify your role. If they're defensive, let it slide this once, but make sure your immediate boss knows your real value privately.

I would stay professional and avoid reacting emotionally. I would keep records of my work, including emails, drafts, and project files, so I have proof of my contribution if needed. If I had a good relationship with the client, I would politely raise the issue in private and explain why proper credit matters to me.

I would be disappointed, but I would not start an argument right away. I would first think about whether it was a misunderstanding or a deliberate choice. If I felt comfortable, I would have an honest conversation with the client and ask for my contribution to be acknowledged.

I think it depends on the situation. If it happened to me once and it looked like a genuine misunderstanding, I would bring it up politely and see how the client responds. If they continued doing it, I would see it as a warning sign and think carefully about whether I wanted to keep working with them.

It really depends on the impact of the situation. If someone taking credit for your work affects your reputation or business, it's important to address it calmly. However, for smaller issues, letting it go may be the wiser choice. Clear agreements and proper documentation can help prevent similar problems in the future.
