Don't get me wrong - I am all for starting your own business, being your own boss, making residual income and using social media to be successful (even though written word is more my preference). But a lot of Affiliate Marketers just do not seem genuine. It just says "ick" to me.

It's the same discomfort I get when Linda, who I haven't spoken to since 10th grade, messages me on Facebook asking if I want to try her new collagen ----------. The sign up is free but you'll need to be a member and spend at least $70 a month to get your shipment! Pyramid scheme, say what?

I like the authentic side of YouTube where people are ACTUALLY experts on a topic and can recommend products because they've tried them, use them still, and recommend a company because of its quality. Not because they want to make a commission.

Anyway - I'll try to stay off my soapbox about it. But it really grinds my gears.

Anyone share my opinion on this?

There's definitely a huge difference between authentic recommendations and pushy affiliate marketing. The YouTubers you mention who are actual experts usually built their audience first by providing value, then naturally recommend products they use. Compare that to someone who creates an account just to push affiliate links - totally different vibe. I think the key is whether someone would recommend the product even if they weren't getting paid for it. When the recommendation comes from genuine experience and the person is transparent about the affiliate relationship, it doesn't feel slimy at all.

Affiliate marketing can definitely lead to customer fatigue if marketers aren't careful. Constant promotions or repetitive product pushes can make people feel overwhelmed or even annoyed. To avoid this, I believe in balancing promotional content with valuable, non-promotional material. For example, instead of just selling, focus on educating or entertaining your audience. Also, being honest about why you're recommending a product and keeping promotions relevant to your audience can go a long way in reducing fatigue and maintaining trust.

I think people are just tired of being sold to all the time. You see it everywhere now, someone posts something helpful and then boom, there's a link to buy whatever they're talking about. It gets old fast because you can tell when someone actually cares about helping versus when they just want commission money.

Honestly, I don't think customer fatigue is about affiliate marketing itself. It's about bad affiliate marketing. When someone shares a product they actually use and explains how it solved a problem for them, that doesn't feel annoying at all. But when you see the same generic "top 10" lists everywhere with zero personality or real experience behind them, that's when people get sick of it.

Customer fatigue happens when there's no real value being added. Think about it this way: if you're clicking on an article hoping to learn something and it turns out to be just a sales pitch disguised as information, you feel tricked. Do that enough times and people stop trusting any content that has affiliate links in it.

How I see it is that it is a step by step journey. First, someone discovers your content, maybe through a post, video, or ad. At that stage they are just curious, not ready to buy yet. Then you guide them to something more helpful like a free guide, email list, or simple recommendation that builds trust.
