Ask How do you explain what affiliate marketing is to family without sounding shady?

Affiliate marketing often sounds confusing to people who are not familiar with it, and it can even come across as suspicious if explained too quickly. At its core, it simply means recommending products or services online and earning a small commission if someone buys through a shared link. For example, when a person writes a blog post about fitness and adds a link to a protein powder, they may get paid if a reader buys it. The problem is that words like commission or links can make it sound like a scam, even though it is a common business model used by big companies like Amazon. What is the clearest way to explain this to family so they understand it is just digital sales without making it sound shady?

You can compare it to when a friend tells you about a great restaurant and gets a free dessert for the hookup—it's kinda like that. Let them know you're not scamming anyone or selling junk, just recommending stuff you actually use. Mention that even big brands like Amazon do it, so it's not sketchy. As long as you're honest and not pushy about it, people usually go, "Oh, that makes sense."

I'd say something like, "It's just a way to earn money by helping companies find customers. When I share a product I like, and someone buys it through my link, the company gives me a small reward for the referral. Big companies like Amazon do this all the time—it's how they sell more products." Giving clear, everyday examples and avoiding too much detail keeps it simple, so they don't think it's anything shady. It's just online word-of-mouth with a reward attached.

The easiest way is to explain it like this: "It's like when you tell a friend about a great restaurant and they go there because of your recommendation. But in affiliate marketing, the restaurant thanks you with a small reward for bringing them a customer." It helps if you mention big names like Amazon, so they know it's legitimate. Avoiding technical terms also helps, so just focus on the idea of sharing helpful recommendations and getting a thank-you in return.

The easiest way is to explain it in very simple terms without using complicated marketing words. I usually say something like, "I recommend products online, and if someone buys through my link, I earn a small commission." When explained that way, it sounds more normal and understandable. I think people get suspicious only when it sounds overly technical or secretive.
