When you sell a website, the rankings do not disappear right away. They usually stay as long as the content, links, and structure remain the same. The new owner can keep those rankings if they maintain the site properly. But if they change the domain, delete pages, or stop updating the site, the rankings will likely drop over time. SEO is tied to the website itself, not the person who owns it. What do you think matters most for keeping rankings stable after a website changes hands?
 
The most important factor is consistency keeping the core things that built the rankings in the first place, like content quality, site structure, and backlinks, unchanged or carefully improved rather than removed. Big sudden changes after a sale usually trigger ranking drops because search engines need time to re-evaluate the site. In my view, a smooth transition where updates are gradual and focused on maintaining user value is what really keeps rankings stable after ownership changes.
 
In many cases, selling a website does not automatically affect SEO rankings. Search engines care more about the site's content, quality, and user experience than who owns it. If the new owner keeps the same structure, content, and standards, rankings may remain stable. Problems usually start when major changes are made too quickly after the sale
 
Rankings can drop if the new owner removes important content, changes URLs without proper redirects, or fills the site with low-quality articles and excessive ads. Search engines notice these changes over time. A website that was performing well can lose traffic if the factors that helped it rank are no longer maintained.
