On social media, be cool and respectful—reply to comments nicely and don't freak out over criticism. Basically, just treat people how you'd want to be treated online. If brands play it fair and keep things real, people are way more likely to trust them and stick around. Simple as that.
 
Digital marketing has a bunch of unwritten rules that most pros follow without even thinking about it. You can't spam people's inboxes nonstop or blast them with aggressive sales messages every single day. That burns trust fast. People expect honest communication, so if you're selling something, you need to be upfront about it instead of hiding behind fake reviews or shady tactics.
 
Honestly, transparency is probably the biggest thing. If you're collecting someone's email or tracking their behavior online, they should know about it. Cookie consent banners exist for this reason now. Same goes for sponsored content or affiliate links. You have to disclose that clearly or people feel tricked when they find out later.
 
Nobody likes being manipulated. The brands that do well long term are the ones that communicate openly about what they're doing and why. It builds credibility. Sure, you might lose a few sales by being honest upfront, but you gain something way more valuable, which is trust from people who actually want to hear from you.
 
There is also the whole issue of respecting people's time and boundaries. You see some companies bombarding potential customers with retargeting ads everywhere they go online. That crosses a line pretty quickly and just annoys people. Same with cold outreach that feels generic and mass produced.
 
If you're reaching out to someone, make it personal and relevant. Don't waste their time with something they obviously won't care about. This applies to social media too. Engagement should feel natural, not forced or robotic. When brands reply to comments or messages, people can tell if it's genuine or just copy pasted responses.
 
Permission matters way more than people realize. You can't just add someone to your mailing list because they bought something from you once. They need to opt in specifically for marketing emails. This is where regulations like GDPR come in, but even outside legal requirements, it's just common sense.
 
If someone unsubscribes, you respect that immediately instead of trying workarounds to keep messaging them through other channels. Following these rules isn't just about avoiding fines. It's about showing you respect people's choices. When someone feels like they have control over how you contact them, they're way more likely to stay engaged when they do choose to hear from you.
 
Cultural sensitivity plays a role too, especially if you're marketing globally. What works in one region might completely backfire somewhere else. Humor doesn't always translate, and certain images or phrases can be offensive without you even realizing it. You need to research your audience and understand their values before pushing content at them.
 
Netiquette in real sense will mean the principles that guide being online users. As a digital marketer, there is a need to ensure that your audience needs to be taken seriously. Don't give them false hope, and don't break their trust in you. Know what each audience what and give them.
