Ask What do you truly hate about pop-ups?

Sign into anything and you'll have to swat away 8 pop-ups before you can make the 3-second settings change you came for. And after you've made that change? More pop-ups, asking if I want your damn credit-card-required 3-day trial. And if I take it? To explain the new features, I get, you guessed it, 2389 MORE POP-UPS!

We need to do something about it. Pop-ups were invented for advertisers, not to interrupt users (who are often already paying). Now the tool I'm paying for forces me to click through 14 step product tours so that some product manager can brag about "increased activation"—never mind that I disengaged a minute after completing that forced product tours.

Ok, let me be constructive... here's why I think this is happening:

First, pop-ups work in the short term. They generate engagement which someone can brag about in their next 1:1 with their manager. They erode user trust, but that rarely comes up.

For me, the worst thing is how pop-ups destroy focus. You start one simple action, and suddenly your screen is crowded with messages, offers, or tutorials. Even paid apps don't get a pass, sometimes you feel punished for being a user. The annoying part is that companies think this will improve engagement, but it usually just makes me distrust the service. Pop-ups can work, but when overused, they make everything feel stressful instead of helpful.

The most frustrating thing about pop-ups is when they are irrelevant, disruptive, and over-used. Constant, intrusive pop-ups that provide little to no value to the user are a surefire way to annoy people and damage your marketing efforts. The goal should be leveraging pop-ups strategically to capture attention and drive conversions, not bombarding visitors. Moderation and relevance are key - pop-ups need to complement the user experience, not detract from it.
