Ask What do you do when the platform your business depends on starts dying?

A lot of freelancers build everything on one platform, then one day that platform starts losing clients or changes how it works, and suddenly your income feels shaky. It is like building a shop inside someone else's building and the landlord is slowly closing down. Some people move to other platforms, others try to build their own client base outside. But shifting is not always easy, especially when you have been relying on one place for a long time. What did you do when this happened to you?

First, figure out if things are really getting worse or if it just feels that way. Check your sales, views, or customer activity. If the numbers are dropping, start looking for other places to reach people. You can build a website, grow an email list, or try other social media platforms. The goal is to avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Keep taking care of the customers you already have, but also prepare for what comes next.

That is one reason many freelancers say it is risky to depend completely on a single platform. A platform can change its rules, increase fees, reduce visibility, or simply lose users, and there is very little an individual freelancer can do about it. When that starts happening, the best response is usually to begin diversifying before things become critical.

One approach that makes sense is to treat freelance platforms as a source of leads rather than the entire business. Building a personal website, creating a professional social media presence, collecting testimonials, and growing an email list can help create direct connections with clients. That way, if one platform struggles, there are still other ways to attract work and maintain income.

When a core platform starts declining, the key is to reduce dependency and diversify quickly. Start by building presence on alternative channels, shifting audience ownership to assets you control like email lists or a website, and testing new platforms early before fully committing. At the same time, analyze what part of your results came from that platform so you can replace it strategically rather than reactively.
