I read somewhere that thumbnails impact click-through rates more than anything else. I've been experimenting with different thumbnail designs in my native ad campaigns.
I used stock photos and generic images related to the ad topic. Those ads didn't always catch attention, and the CTR stayed pretty low.
Then, I tried adding bright borders and contrasting colors to make the thumbnails stand out.
I also tested using images with faces or something unexpected to grab the viewer's eye. Some of these changes seemed to make a noticeable difference.
