The best first step to take with email marketing is to gather a list of subscribers who are 100% opt-in and active. That means they've asked to receive your mail specifically, and did so pretty recently. Folks who have expressed interest in your news are the ones who'll be the most valuable - if they care what you have to say, then they'll read your mail, click your links, and share it with their friends.

To put together that list, I'd recommend starting with your current clients/customers. Then, add a signup form to your website and social media pages, and share it all over the place.

The next step is to make sure your newsletter provides some real value to those folks who read it. Think of the kind of email you like to receive in your inbox- if it's interesting, tells a good story, and gives you useful information, then your readers are gonna love it!
