Some people are so set in their routines that they don't see what is going on around them. If they cut through the biscuit aisle to get to washing powder then that is where they go.

Others are like toddlers in the midst of the "terrible twos". All these new boxes that people are emptying and putting the contents on the shelves but no-one has asked them to join in the excitement. They want to be noticed so they make their presence known.

There are also the ones that want to feel important so they make sure that those working realise they are inconveniencing a very important person. Their path should not be blocked by the hoi palloi. Go around is not in their vocabulary.

Yes, today I am feeling very cynical.

The truth is that habits help us function, but if you choose autopilot dulls awareness. When there is changes on daily routine, we stop scanning for change, opportunity, or warning signs. No doubt, Routines save mental energy, yet they cost peripheral vision. Staying effective means scheduling deliberate "look up" moments. If not life happens around you while you're busy replaying yesterday.

It's like people get stuck on autopilot and the rest of the world just becomes background noise. They're so busy ticking through their mental checklist that they miss the little stuff: the neighbor who looks down, the weird change in the weather, or even a new shop opening up. Breaking that trance just takes a second. Look up. Notice one new thing. Ask a random question. Suddenly, the world feels alive again, and you realize you've been missing the show while staring at your feet.

It's interesting how easy it is to fall into routines and miss out on the details and surprises that make life more vibrant. Taking a moment to pause, look around, and engage with the world can truly change your perspective. Sometimes all it takes is a simple shift in awareness to break free from that autopilot mode and truly appreciate the beauty and excitement around us.

Indeed, it's remarkable how routines can subtly envelop us, narrowing our focus until the world around us fades into the background. Breaking free from this cycle of autopilot requires a conscious effort to pause, observe, and engage with our surroundings. By taking that moment to shift our awareness, we open ourselves up to the richness and diversity of life, allowing us to appreciate the intricacies and surprises that await us each day.
