Should newbies be bidding for tasks in freelancing?

Personally, I see bidding, especially by the new freelancers, as a total waste of time. Nobody will see you. You don't have the required skills that will attract clients to you. So you don't expect them to be taking you serious. You can however identify your skills, and then make sure that you are promoting your skills by showing your portfolios. Remember, the more portfolios you have, the more trust that you will have. What's your take about this?
