I just started freelancing, and I'm not sure if I should ask for a deposit before starting a project. Some people say it protects you from unpaid work. Others say it might scare clients away.

I don't want to seem untrustworthy or too demanding. At the same time, I don't want to work for free if a client disappears. I also don't know how much to ask for if I do request a deposit. Should it be a percentage or a flat amount?

How do freelancers handle this? Should I ask for a deposit before starting work, or is there a better way to ensure I get paid?
