I am a freelance UI designer and I am stuck on this. Some people say detailed case studies build trust and show process and they attract serious buyers. Others tell me clients just scroll portfolios and DMs they don't read long write-ups. I am posting before/afters now but I am not sure if I should spend hours breaking down research wireframes and results. It takes a lot of time away from client work. I am confused about what actually works.

The question I want to ask you guys Should freelance designers publish case studies to attract buyers or is it a waste of time?

As a freelance UI designer, creating case studies can be a valuable way to showcase your work and attract potential clients. While it's true that some clients may mainly look at the visual aspects of your portfolio, there are several reasons why investing time in detailed case studies could benefit you in the long run:

1. **Build Trust and Credibility**: Detailed case studies allow you to illustrate your design process, problem-solving skills, and the rationale behind your design decisions. This transparency can help establish trust with potential clients and showcase your expertise.

2. **Show Problem-Solving Skills**: By breaking down your projects into detailed case studies, you can demonstrate how you approach challenges, conduct research, iterate on designs, and ultimately achieve successful outcomes. This can be particularly attractive to clients who are looking for designers who can deliver results.

3. **Educate Potential Clients**: Case studies provide an opportunity to educate potential clients about the value you can bring to their projects. They can get a better understanding of your thought process and the strategic thinking behind your designs, which can set you apart from designers who only showcase visuals.

4. **Differentiate Yourself**: In a competitive market, detailed case studies can help you stand out from the crowd. They show that you are willing to go the extra mile to explain your work and demonstrate your professionalism.

5. **SEO Benefits**: Publishing case studies on your website can also have SEO benefits, as they provide valuable content that can attract organic traffic from search engines.

However, it's also important to consider the time and effort involved in creating detailed case studies. If you find that investing hours in breaking down research, wireframes, and results is taking away from your client work, you may need to strike a balance.

One approach could be to create a mix of visual showcases and selective detailed case studies for your portfolio. This way, you can cater to both types of clients – those who prefer to quickly browse visuals and those who are interested in a deeper dive into your process.

Ultimately, the decision to publish case studies should align with your goals as a freelance designer and the type of clients you want to attract. Experiment with different approaches, gather feedback from your audience, and track the impact of your case studies on client inquiries and conversions to determine what works best for you.
