Must I carry my clients along when I want to increase my payment charge?

It is better for the freelancers to carry their clients along whenever they want to increase their charges. Doing this will let the clients be aware and fully prepared against these increments. It is always better because if they don't, other freelancers may leverage on that to snatch the clients. When the clients are not aware of the price change, they may have issues with the freelancers in some instances. What do you think about this?
