Making money on social media marketing may demand you to use some money. The fact is that the platforms are saturated and will require you to have some little money to push your campaigns, at least to be noticed by more people.

I could remember when I was promoting an ebook, I couldn't make much sale because I was doing it for free.

Spending money to get your products reach the right platforms would be the first step to making money on SMM.
 
I disagree with this. You can build an audience without paying for ads, it just takes longer. Consistent posting, engaging with comments, and creating content people actually want to share can grow your reach organically. Sure, paid ads speed things up, but saying you can't make money without spending isn't accurate.
 
The problem is that organic reach on most platforms has dropped a lot over the years. Facebook and Instagram especially push paid content more than free posts now. So while you technically can grow without spending, the algorithm makes it harder. I tried promoting my services for free and got almost no traction. Once I spent even twenty dollars on a targeted ad, I started seeing actual results.
 
From what I've experienced, spending a small budget helps you test what works faster. You can post organically for months and still not know if your message connects with people. But if you run a few cheap ads, you'll see quickly what gets clicks and what doesn't. Then you can adjust your approach. So it's not that you need money to make money, but money lets you learn faster.
 
It just takes more hustle. Stuff like posting cool content, joining groups, using trending hashtags, and actually talking to people can grow your followers for free. You can also make cash with collabs, shoutouts, or affiliate links. Yeah, it's slower than running ads, but it works if you're consistent and know your audience. Spending money helps speed things up, but it's not a must. Tons of creators and small biz owners started with nothing and still made bank just by being smart with their content and connections.
