Ask Is it against platform rules to ask a client to pay half before starting a job?

Asking for a deposit is a normal way to do business in the real world because it shows the client is serious. It helps the freelancer feel safe knowing they will not be cheated after working for many hours. I have heard that some websites do not like it when you ask for money before a milestone is finished. Is it actually against the terms of service to request an upfront payment? I would love to hear how you guys manage your payments safely.
