Ask Is it a good idea to offer a discount to a new client just to get your foot in the door?

A lot of freelancers lower their rate when starting with a new client, hoping it will lead to more work down the line. Sometimes it does, but other times the client just expects that low rate to continue. There is also the risk of attracting clients who only care about price and not quality. It can be a short term gain with long term problems. Have you tried this approach, and did it actually work out the way you hoped?
