Digital marketing is needed for both customers retention and acquisition. However, it is better for digital marketers to make use of digital marketing for customer retention first. Doing digital marketing effectively will make customers want to stay. Enough conviction however, through strong CTAs will make the customers want to perform some actions that the affiliate marketers want them to perform.

But I think we have to remember that digital marketing can only do so much to help with retention if the product itself isn't great. You can send all the perfect emails in the world, but if the app breaks constantly or the service is slow, people aren't going to stay just because of the marketing.

I get why people say retention is cheaper, but I'm not totally sure it should come first for every business. If you're a new company, you don't have any customers to retain yet! You have to put a lot of effort into acquisition first just to get a good base of people. Also, if you only focus on keeping the same people, your business can't really grow past a certain point.
