Ask Is broad match still a viable option in Google Ads or has it gotten too unpredictable?

Broad match in Google Ads means your ad can show up for searches that are related to your keyword, even if the exact words are different. This sounds useful because it casts a wide net, but it can also show your ad for searches that are not relevant to your business and waste your budget. Google has improved its broad match system over the years using smarter technology, but it still needs careful watching. Many experienced marketers use broad match only when they have a good budget and enough data to filter out bad traffic. Do you still use broad match or have you moved to more specific match types?

Broad match became the default for new Google Ads campaigns in mid-2024, which says a lot. Google clearly wants advertisers to trust its system more. But trusting a machine with your budget is not the same as that machine actually spending it wisely on your behalf.

The problem with broad match is that Google decides what your ad is relevant for, not you. And Google's idea of "relevant" can be surprisingly loose. If you are not checking what searches actually triggered your ad regularly, you could be paying for clicks that have nothing to do with what you sell.

What people forget is that broad match works very differently depending on how much data your account already has. If your campaign is new and has almost no history of who bought from you before, the system is basically guessing. Give it more to learn from first before trusting it with broad match.

To be honest, broad match is much better than it was years ago, but I still would not use it without careful monitoring. Google has improved its understanding of search intent, so broad match can find relevant searches that you may never think to target manually.

There is a weird thing happening where Google keeps pushing broad match but also keeps adding more ways to limit it, like negative keyword lists and brand exclusion controls. That almost proves they know it goes off-track without guardrails. You should not need that many guardrails for something being called the smart option.

Broad match can quietly eat your budget on searches that look related but come from people who will never buy anything. Someone searching "free email tools" and someone searching "best email tool for small businesses" are very different people, but broad match might treat them the same.
