I feel a little unsure about how deep to go with subcategories. I look at different online stores and some have just a few while others go really deep. I cannot tell what makes browsing easier for customers.

I set up a demo e-commerce store with several main categories. I added multiple subcategories under each one to organize the products. I tested navigating through them and it feels like it could get confusing if there are too many.

Now I keep wondering how many layers is too much. I want the store to feel simple to explore. How many subcategories are too many for smooth navigation flow?

People don't want to scroll through a giant list just to figure out where to click. If you've got 15 or more, that's a big hint you should probably regroup things or create a few broader categories. The whole point is to help people get where they're trying to go without making them think too hard. When there are too many choices, users start guessing, clicking around randomly, or just giving up.

Users don't want to sift through a long list just to find the right link. If your list has 15 or more items, it's a strong signal that you should consider reorganizing or grouping them into broader categories. The goal is to guide people to their destination smoothly, without making them overthink. When options are overwhelming, users may guess, click aimlessly, or abandon the task altogether for their own reasons

When it comes to subcategories, less can often be more for a smooth navigation experience. Having too many layers of subcategories can indeed lead to confusion and frustration for users. Aim to keep it simple and intuitive. If you find yourself with 15 or more subcategories, it might be a sign that you need to reconsider your organization strategy.

For smooth navigation, it's usually best to keep subcategories shallow ideally no more than two or three levels deep. Too many layers can confuse shoppers and make it harder for them to find products quickly. Focus on clear, logical grouping, and only create subcategories that genuinely help organize products. If you find yourself adding dozens under one main category, consider merging or renaming them to keep browsing simple and intuitive.

Having too many subcategories can indeed hinder smooth navigation flow for users. While it ultimately depends on the nature of your products and how they can be logically grouped, keeping the hierarchy shallow with ideally no more than two or three levels can help maintain clarity. If you notice that you have more than 15 subcategories under one main category, it might be time to rethink your organization strategy to simplify the browsing experience for customers.

There's no exact number, but once you go past like 7–10 subcategories on one screen, it can start to feel like a mess. People don't want to read a huge list. It's usually better to group stuff and show things step by step instead of throwing everything at them at once. Think of it like explaining something to a friend. f you've got 15 or 20 options sitting there, it's probably time to reorganize.

It's crucial to strike a balance when it comes to the number of subcategories for smooth navigation on your e-commerce store.
