Being good at digital marketing is necessary, but networking, which means building connections with other people in the industry, can open doors that skill alone cannot. Many job opportunities, client referrals, and collaborations come through people you know rather than job listings. That said, networking without real skills behind you does not go very far either. The best position is to have both: be genuinely good at what you do and know people who can connect you to work. So do you think networking or skill matters more when you are just starting out in digital marketing?

When starting out in digital marketing, skill matters more because it gives you something real to offer. Without basic ability in things like content, ads, or analytics, networking alone won't lead to lasting opportunities. However, networking still plays a big supporting role because it can help you get your first break faster through referrals, internships, or small projects. So the stronger foundation is skill, but networking helps you unlock opportunities that you might not reach just by applying online. Ideally, you should focus on building both together, but prioritize becoming genuinely capable first.

I think both matter, but if I had to choose one, I would focus on getting good at the skill first. Networking can open doors, but you still need something valuable to offer when those doors open. I have seen people with great connections struggle because they could not deliver results. On the other hand, skilled marketers often attract opportunities naturally because their work speaks for them.

In digital marketing, skill is your engine, but networking is the road map. You can master SEO, analytics, or ads, but without connections mentors, peers, clients your work may stay invisible. Networking amplifies opportunities, opens doors to collaborations, and exposes you to trends you can't learn from courses alone. In short, skills get you noticed; networking gets you hired, trusted, and remembered. Together, they're unstoppable.
