Cool thing about display ads they're like street art on a blank wall. I get to play with color and space to catch someone's eye as they scroll by.
I've tried using bold colors for the call to action and keeping the background simple. Sometimes I leave extra space around the main message so it stands out more. I notice that when I use high contrast, the important parts pop right away. Whitespace seems to give everything room to breathe.
