Users of social media in digital marketing should know when to engage their users and at the same time, when to promote their businesses and products. Doing this will make it easier for the business to grow. When then is it better to use the two? And which one should be done first.

There should not be controversy about which one should come first, as engaging users should be the priority before promoting campaigns, businesses and even products.

A good trick is the 80/20 rule where around 80% of your content should be cool, engaging stuff like tips, memes, or questions and only 20% should be straight-up promo. People get bored if you're always trying to sell them something, so focus on giving value and starting real convos first. That way, when you do promote your stuff, it actually feels natural. Just watch what your followers vibe with and tweak things as you go

The 80/20 rule works great: 80% engagement and 20% promotional. Engagement posts build trust and community. When you do promote, make it valuable: solve a problem, share a limited-time code, or show a demo. Also, pay attention to what flops and what flies. If a casual "How's your week going?" gets replies, lean in. A hard sell? Save it for your story highlights. Balance isn't math.

One good approach is to make sure people get value from your content before asking them to buy something. If every post is promoting a product, many followers will lose interest. A simple balance is sharing useful tips, answering common questions, or posting helpful content most of the time, then mixing in promotional posts occasionally.

Engagement should usually come before promotion. The difference is that people visit social media to interact, learn, or be entertained, not to see constant sales messages. When a business builds trust and keeps its audience interested, promotional posts tend to perform much better because the audience is already paying attention
