The first thing to do is go through the account carefully before making any changes. Look at the campaign structure, the keywords being used, the match types, the bidding settings, and whether conversion tracking is set up correctly. Many poorly managed accounts have broad match keywords eating up budget on irrelevant searches. It is better to fix things step by step rather than delete everything at once, because some parts may still be working. So what do you think is the best way to approach a Google Ads account that was badly set up?

There is also the question of whether to tell the client what the previous agency did wrong. Some clients get upset hearing their money was wasted. It changes how they trust the new manager too, so how that conversation goes can actually affect the whole working relationship going forward.

One thing people overlook is the billing history. Sometimes a bad agency was also overbilling or running campaigns that served their reporting numbers but not the actual business. Before touching keywords or bids, check what money was actually spent and where it went.

Pausing everything and starting fresh sounds drastic but sometimes it saves more money than trying to untangle a mess someone else created. Keeping broken campaigns alive while you audit means you are still paying for clicks that are not doing anything useful.

Not every bad account is the agency's fault either. Some clients refuse to share proper information about their products, ignore recommendations, or set unrealistic spending limits. So before blaming the previous agency for everything, it is worth asking what instructions they were actually given.

Some accounts are not badly set up on purpose. Agencies sometimes just have too many clients and not enough time to give proper attention to each one. The account gets ignored for months, the market changes, and nobody updates anything. Neglect is just as damaging as bad decisions.
