Ask How do you build a portfolio when you have little or no client work yet?

A portfolio is just a collection of your past work that shows a new client that you are capable. The problem is that most clients will not hire you unless they see what you have done before. This situation makes it very hard for beginners to start their journey because they have no samples to show. I think there must be a way to create great samples without having a real boss. How do you build a portfolio when you have little or no client work yet?
