Digital marketing is a rather broad fields that encompasses SEO, Social Media, PPC, Content Marketing, just to name a few.

In my humble opinion, if you're starting out, you want to aim to be a generalist in all of these areas but specialize in 1–2 related fields within digital marketing.

To start, search for a general "Digital Marketing 101" type of guide that will give you the basics of digital marketing and lets you decide on what you want to specialize in.

Once you got the basics down, it's time to improve upon your areas of specialization.

You can do so by devoting 30+ minutes a day to reading the latest blogs on those topics.

A quick Google search will yield plenty of great blogs on any topic imaginable.

Use a tool like Feedly to track all your favorite marketing blogs. On any given day, you can simply open your Feedly, skim through the latest headlines and read ones that interest you.

Repeat this for at least a month, and you'll slowly build up your digital marketing knowledge

This makes a lot of sense, especially the part about being a generalist first. Too many people jump straight into one thing without understanding how everything connects. Like, if you only know SEO but do not get how content marketing works, you're missing half the picture.

I don't know if specializing after just getting the basics is the right move for everyone. Some people need way more time to figure out what they actually like doing. You might think SEO sounds cool, then realize you hate keyword research after three months. Or maybe PPC seems boring until you actually run some ads and see results.

Spending a month reading blogs gives you knowledge, sure, but it doesn't show you what the daily work feels like. Maybe try doing small projects in different areas first before you commit to specializing. That way you know what you're getting into and won't waste time going deep into something you end up hating.

The generalist approach helps when you're applying for jobs because companies want people who can wear multiple hats, especially smaller businesses. They're not hiring separate people for SEO, social media, and content. They need someone who can do all of it reasonably well.

Here's the thing about reading blogs every day: most of them repeat the same information. After a while, you're just seeing different versions of the same advice. What might work better is following a few really good sources and spending the rest of your time practicing. Build a website, run some test campaigns, write content and see what happens.

Digital marketing changes so fast that what you learn today might not matter in six months. Google updates its algorithm, Facebook changes how ads work, new platforms pop up. Reading blogs keeps you updated, but you also need to know which sources actually know what they're talking about.

Some blogs just rehash old information or make claims without backing them up. Before you follow someone's advice, check if they actually have proof it works. And honestly, the best learning happens when things go wrong. You run a campaign that flops, figure out why, then fix it. That sticks with you way more than reading about best practices.

Digital marketing isn't something you master quickly because each area has so many layers. SEO alone could take months to get comfortable with, and that's before you even touch technical SEO or link building. Same with PPC or social media. They all have learning curves. Maybe instead of rushing to specialize, spend more time as a generalist and let yourself naturally drift toward what you enjoy and what gets you results.
