Ask Can the race to the bottom on freelance platforms ever actually be fixed?

The race to the bottom is what happens when freelancers keep lowering their prices to beat each other, and eventually the standard rate for good work drops so low that it barely covers real effort. Platforms make it easy to compare prices, so clients often just pick the cheapest option. Some people say this is just how open markets work and it cannot be changed. Others believe platforms could do more to reward quality over low pricing. It has been a problem for years now and does not seem to be getting better. Do you think there is a real solution, or is this just how freelancing works now?
 
I think it's hard to fully fix because low pricing usually comes from too many people competing for the same jobs. When supply is high, prices naturally drop. The only real way out is for freelancers to focus more on skills, quality, and niche services instead of trying to compete only on price.
 
The core issue is simple: there's always someone willing to work for less. A developer in Jakarta or a writer in Nairobi doesn't have the same rent as someone in San Francisco. Platforms like Upwork profit from volume, so they have no real incentive to enforce minimum rates.

That said, it can be managed, not fixed. Niche platforms use vetting to keep prices high. So the bottom won't disappear, but pros who escape the commodity trap can ignore it. The race only ends when you stop running.

Clients need to stop hunting for bargains and start valuing expertise. Until then, the bottom will keep calling.
