Ask Why do some websites with old and ugly designs still rank better than clean and modern ones?

Google is not looking at your design when it decides where to rank your page. It is looking at whether your content genuinely answers what someone searched for. An old website that has been around for years may have hundreds of other sites linking to it, which Google reads as a sign that people trust it. It may also have years of detailed content built up on its topic. A new, well-designed site with little content and few links pointing to it will have a hard time competing no matter how good it looks. Design helps people stay on your site, but it does not directly tell Google your page deserves to rank. Do you think Google should factor in design and user experience more heavily when ranking pages?

I think Google should consider user experience, but not too heavily. A clean, fast, and easy-to-use website helps visitors find information and stay engaged, so it deserves some credit. However, content quality should remain the biggest ranking factor. A beautiful website with weak or unhelpful content shouldn't outrank an older site that provides detailed, trustworthy answers. The best approach is balancing both reward great content first, while also giving some importance to usability and user experience.

Search rankings are driven more by authority and relevance than visual design. Older websites often have stronger backlink profiles, longer domain history, and more established content that search engines trust. They may also be highly optimized for keywords and technical SEO, even if the interface looks outdated. In contrast, modern-looking sites can still rank poorly if they lack authority signals, quality backlinks, or properly optimized content.

Design matters for usability, but it isn't the main factor Google uses for rankings. A site that clearly answers a search query and has strong authority will usually outrank a prettier but weaker page. However, good UX still helps because it keeps people engaged and makes content easier to use. Ideally, strong content and good design work together.

The main reason is that Google ranks websites based on many factors beyond appearance. The difference is that a modern design looks better to people, while search engines care more about content quality, relevance, authority, and user satisfaction. An old-looking site with strong content can still outperform a beautiful site with weak information.

A modern design can make a website look better, but search engines care about much more than appearance. Older websites often have years of content, backlinks, and trust built up over time. If people keep visiting and finding useful information there, the site can continue ranking well even if it looks outdated.
