I think it doesn't really get "easier," but you learn how to plan around it better. Many freelancers start setting aside a small backup fund for days they can't work. Over time, this reduces the stress because you're not fully dependent on working every single day to earn.
First time you drag your feverish butt to work, you're like, "Okay, once." But by the tenth time? You're just chugging DayQuil like candy, hiding coughs on Zoom, and praying no one notices you're dying. The math never changes: rent vs. lying down. That sucks forever. But you're still exhausted, still calculating if you can "afford" to be sick. That's not getting easier; it's just surviving. And surviving day after day? Yeah, it's total garbage no matter how used to it you get.
The first time you drag yourself to work with a fever, you think it's a one-off. But by the tenth time, you're just calculating how much missing a day would cost in rent. You learn tricks: chugging DayQuil, saving emergency PTO for when your kid gets sick, or working through migraines because the alternative is losing your job. The exhaustion compounds. What changes isn't your situation but your tolerance for suffering. You stop expecting basic decency.
