One thing that surprises a lot of new freelancers is how some clients assume that working for yourself means you are always free. They send messages at odd hours and expect fast replies because, in their mind, you have no office schedule to follow. But freelancers still need structure to do good work, just like anyone else. Setting working hours sounds simple, but it gets complicated when you are afraid that pushing back might cost you the job. How do you handle this without damaging the relationship?

The main thing is to set boundaries early so they don't get used to that. I usually just tell people my working hours and when I'll respond, and then stick to it. If they message me late or expect an instant reply, I don't rush. You've got to be consistent too, because if you reply at weird hours once, they'll expect it every time. You don't have to be rude about it, just clear. At the end of the day, you avoid burnout and people actually take you more seriously when you're organized

Clear communication of working hours and response times is key. Being self-employed doesn't mean 24/7 availability setting boundaries ensures clients understand when to expect responses, and most respect those limits once they're clearly defined.

I feel it helps to set clear working hours early so clients know when you're available and when you're not. Many people assume working for yourself means being free all day, but that can lead to burnout fast. A polite message explaining response times usually fixes a lot.
