I feel a little confused about promo code placement right now. I see some online stores show the field right away while others hide it until later. I cannot figure out which approach makes the checkout easier for customers.

I built a demo e-commerce store and added a visible promo code field at checkout. I tested it myself and entering a code worked fine, although it felt like it might distract from completing the order.

Now I keep thinking about whether hiding it would help streamline the process. Should promo code fields be hidden or visible during checkout?
 
Leaving them out in the open can make people feel like they're scoring a deal, which is always nice if they actually have a code. But if someone doesn't have one, it can just look like extra clutter and make checkout feel more complicated than it needs to be. A lot of sites go for a middle ground.
