Ask Why does Google sometimes show a completely different description for your page than the one you actually wrote?

The description that appears under your page title in Google search results is called a meta description. You can write one yourself, but Google does not always use it. Google will replace your description with a different section of your page if it decides that section is a better match for what the person searched for. This means Google is trying to show the most relevant information, not necessarily what you want people to see. It is not a penalty or an error. It is just Google making its own judgment about what will help the searcher. Do you think website owners should have full control over how their pages appear in search results, or is it better to let search engines decide?

I think it's better that search engines like Google decide in most cases. Website owners can guide things with a meta description, but users search with different intents, so one fixed description doesn't always fit everyone. Google rewriting it can actually improve click quality because it highlights the part of the page that best matches the query. Full control might look nice for branding, but it could reduce relevance for users, which is the main goal of search.

Google does this when it believes another description will match the user's search better. If your meta description does not clearly answer the search query or is too general, Google may choose text from the page that it thinks is more relevant. This is quite common and does not always mean there is a problem with your page.

It can be surprising to see Google ignore the description you wrote, but it happens often. Google looks at the content on the page and the words people searched for. If it finds another section that seems more useful for that search, it may display that instead.

Google may show a different description for your page because it automatically generates the snippet it believes best matches a user's search query. If your meta description doesn't closely match the searched keywords or if other page content is more relevant, Google may replace it with text from the page to provide a more useful and accurate preview.
