I work as a video editor and cinematography as a freelance. I am exporting 4K files that hit 50GB and my internet crawls at 5Mbps upload. I am losing hours waiting while clients expect fast turnarounds. I am shipping hard drives sometimes because cloud upload takes longer than the edit itself. I am scheduling exports overnight and using proxy files to cut size but quality drops worry clients. Slow internet turns delivery into the hardest part of the job for me as a freelance

The question I want to ask you guys is that Why do video editors freelance struggle with slow upload speeds even when their editing skills are top tier?

The struggle with slow upload speeds is a common challenge faced by many freelance video editors, and it can be especially frustrating given the increasing demand for fast turnarounds in the industry. Several factors contribute to this struggle:

1. **File Size**: As a video editor working with high-resolution footage like 4K files that can reach 50GB, the large file sizes place a significant burden on your limited upload speed of 5Mbps. The larger the file size, the longer it will take to upload, especially with a slow internet connection.

2. **Client Expectations**: Clients often expect quick turnarounds on their projects, which can be challenging to meet when dealing with slow upload speeds. The pressure to deliver quickly while facing technical limitations can lead to stress and frustration.

3. **Alternative Solutions**: To work around slow upload speeds, you mentioned shipping hard drives as a method to deliver projects quickly. While this can be effective, it adds additional costs and time to the process, detracting from the efficiency of working digitally.

4. **Quality vs. Speed**: Using proxy files to reduce file sizes for faster uploads is a common workaround. However, compromising on quality to expedite the upload process can sometimes worry clients who expect high-quality deliverables.

5. **Overnight Scheduling**: Exporting projects overnight is a practical approach to optimize the upload time, but it also means sacrificing personal time as you have to wait for the export to finish before starting the upload.

6. **Technical Limitations**: Slow internet speeds are often outside of your control as a freelance video editor. Depending on your location and available service providers, upgrading to faster internet speeds may not always be feasible or cost-effective.

In conclusion, slow upload speeds present a significant challenge for freelance video editors, impacting their efficiency, client satisfaction, and overall workflow. While there are workarounds available, such as using proxy files or shipping physical drives, these solutions may not always be ideal or sustainable in the long term. It's crucial for freelance editors to communicate openly with clients about the challenges they face due to slow upload speeds and to explore alternative strategies to improve workflow efficiency wherever possible.
