Ask Why do some companies give affiliates free samples while others don’t?

Some businesses believe that sending free samples to affiliates is a smart investment because it allows them to give real, hands-on feedback and create more convincing promotions. For instance, a company selling supplements might send out a month's supply so affiliates can share results and build credibility. Other companies avoid this practice because it adds to their costs and they prefer affiliates to promote using the materials already provided, such as product images, testimonials, and sales copy. It often depends on the company's budget and how confident they are in their product's ability to win people over. Do you think offering samples makes affiliate promotions more trustworthy, or can a skilled affiliate still be convincing without trying the product personally?

Companies give free samples to affiliates to make promotion easier and more effective. When affiliates experience the product, they can share honest opinions, which helps build trust with their audience. However, not all companies can afford to give out free samples, especially smaller ones. Some may also feel it's unnecessary if their affiliates can promote the product without actually trying it. It really depends on the company's resources and how they choose to work with affiliates.

It usually comes down to the product type and how much it costs to make. If a company sells something cheap to produce, like ebooks or software, they can give it away without losing much money. But if they sell physical items that need shipping and materials, giving out samples cuts into their budget fast.

Smaller companies or startups probably can't afford to send stuff out for free, especially when they're still trying to stay profitable. There's also the issue of trust. Some businesses worry that people will take the freebie and never actually promote anything, so they skip samples altogether and just focus on affiliates who are already committed.

If the product needs to be tried before someone buys it, like skincare or food, then samples make sense. But for things people can understand just from a description or video, there's less reason to send anything physical. Some affiliate programs are structured around volume too, where they'd rather have lots of people promoting with commission only instead of spending money upfront on a smaller group.

I would say some companies give free samples because it helps affiliates understand the product better before promoting it. When an affiliate has real experience with what they are recommending, the content usually becomes more convincing and can lead to higher conversions.

Other companies skip samples, often for practical reasons. Digital products are easy to preview without shipping costs. Sending hundreds of samples eats profits, especially if affiliates have small audiences or poor track records. Some brands also worry about resellers grabbing freebies just to flip them. Instead, they provide discount codes, high-res images, or detailed specs, trusting affiliates to sell based on reputation and data. It's really about balancing trust, budget, and product type.
