I found that it depends on the type of offer you are looking to promote. I've been doing affiliate marketing for over 12 years and I can conveniently reach the following conclusions from my experiences so far:
Search Traffic is one of the most targeted source of traffic and works well for both cost per sale and cost per lead offers. It is so laser targeted and the traffic comprises of persons looking for solutions or answers to certain problems. Search engine marketing is very expensive and search PPC prices keeps soaring high due to competition. There are however buyer niches that are still obscure with reasonable search volumes. If you are lucky to find one you will likely bank hard assuming you know what you are doing. Search engine optimization also falls into this category. SEO is very expensive and time consuming, you may however get some Google love if you are able to churn out the right content as regularly as possible.
Social Media is another source that can work excellently well for cost per sale and cost per lead offers. Each of the social media networks have their strengths but you should pick one, stick to it for some time and figure it out. I can write a lot more about my experience here but that'll make my writeup too long.
