SEM, or Search Engine Marketing, is basically paying Google to show your site when people search for stuff you're selling or talking about. SMM, or Social Media Marketing, is all about posting on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and stuff like that making people like, share, and follow you. SEM catches people who are already looking for something, while SMM is more about hanging out with your audience, showing off your brand, and keeping people interested.
 
One way I like to explain it is that SEM focuses on search engines while SMM focuses on social media platforms. SEM includes paid ads and sometimes SEO efforts to show your website in search results, targeting users who are actively looking for products or services. SMM is about posting content, running ads, and engaging audiences on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. SEM captures intent-based traffic, while SMM builds awareness and engagement. Both can work together to drive traffic and conversions.
